Retail Therapy 'A sparkling new musical set in Denny’s Department Store bringing you “tomorrows fashions today” gives a comic insight into the lives of the staff striving to deliver the very best service to its customers. Filled with romance, deceit, technological challenges and musical numbers including “On a Jolly with your Trolley” “The Customer is Always Right” and “Stuck in a Job That I Hate”. With a witty original script and score this musical enjoyed a small rural tour of the West Country where it received rave reviews. So come and treat yourselves to a little Retail Therapy.' This began as a three Act musical comedy with a simple plot, a love story and upbeat catchy songs suitable for a cast of 6 men and 5 women, plus up to 10 supporting roles/chorus.'Retail Therapy' toured with a small, select and very talented cast, to 5 unusual venues (including a cage fighting club) in Somerset September 2011. Following editing to 50 minutes running time and the ruthless omitting of songs and scenes it then premiered at the Edinburgh Fringe August 2012.

In this case it’s department store workers but, like most of these shows, there’s nothing particularly new in terms of characters or plot. But the acting’s good, the jokes are pretty great and the whole thing is completely fun. What really marks this one out from the rest is the quality of song lyrics and musical composition. They’re not only good in their own right, but manage to pay homage to classic musicals. If you’ve worked in a shop you’ll enjoy the sense of familiarity, if you haven’t you’ll enjoy the ridiculous clichés. It’s not perfect, but you’ll leave happy. Greenside, 14-18 Aug, 3.00pm. |
